Set of 4 rims The New Aero The Razor 19" or 21" for Tesla Model S
Product details
When building an airwheel, the key is to design one that moves as little air as necessary. Conversely, a turbo fan is designed to move as much air as possible.
Air friction is proportional to the square of the speed between an object and the air, for example, twice the speed results in four times the friction and four times the energy consumption. Let's imagine the wheel of a car rolling, the tire touching the ground has a zero speed in air. The centre of the wheel has the same speed as the car. This means that the top of the wheel has twice the speed of the car.
Thus, the crucial part of the aerodynamic wheel is the surface where the wheel interacts with the air coming from the front of the vehicle. It is important to keep this surface as smooth and closed as possible.
The second determining factor is the resistance created by the rotation of the impeller. The rotation of a fan requires more energy than that of a disc. With this in mind, we made sure that the inside of the impeller is flat and smooth and that the ventilation holes are formed in such a way that they do not displace the air. The manufacturing technique also allows us to have the left and right wheel facing the car, without creating lateral force and achieving a symmetrical and elegant wake effect behind the car.
Last but not least, the weight of the wheels has an impact on their efficiency, especially during acceleration and braking. A forged wheel generally weighs 25 to 30% less than a cast wheel of the same design. However, it is not as simple as putting the wheel on a ladder. A mass away from the center of rotation is worse than a mass close to the center. Compare this to a figure skater who has her arms in a pirouette. When she pulls her arms in, she will suddenly start spinning faster even though she has not added any energy.
During the development of the Model S, Tesla called on EXA for computational fluid dynamics (think "virtual wind tunnel"). We 3D scanned the Model S with the OEM Turbine wheel and provided it to EXA to use as a reference. EXA's simulation results indicate that our wheel, the Razor ™, reduces the resistance of the entire car by 9.9%. Lateral force is reduced by 94%, and the Turbine wheel has an inherent asymmetrical upward force of 28% compared to the TNA wheel Razor ™. This result is achieved by considering aerodynamics throughout the wheel design process.
Our customers benefit from a quieter ride, better stability, and improved performance.
