Why Tesla is Challenging Current Regulations

Tesla claims in its application that current regulations are overly restrictive. The company feels that restrictions focusing on traditional car controls, such as steering wheels and pedals, could hinder innovation. Tesla’s vision includes automobiles that may not even have such controls. It would enable new and unorthodox seating combinations. Tesla states:

“At this time, we do not believe that vehicle control or seating design are an appropriate determinator for related user obligations and we are concerned that overly conservative requirements will provide a burden on innovation in vehicle design permitted by the integration of higher automation.”

Rotating and Reclining Seats: A New Norm?

The concept of rotating and reclining seats signifies a shift in car design. Currently, vehicle interiors are built to meet the needs of the human driver. It includes fixed seats that face forward, allowing the driver to effortlessly control the car while keeping a clear view of the road. However, as we move closer to completely autonomous vehicles, old design limits are becoming obsolete.

With the arrival of self-driving technology, the requirement for seats to be oriented forward is eliminated. This creates new options for interior design.
