Tesla limits self-driving in Europe due to new UN/ECE regulations
The European Commission has ruled that the Tesla company violated Regulation 79 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
The countries concerned by this limitation are : Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Monaco, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Consequently Tesla is obliged to adapt its Autopilot system.
The element at issue is the turning radius, in accordance with paragraph 5.6.4.4, which limits the maximum lateral acceleration permitted by a “Category B” lane departure warning system to 3 metres per second squared.
Tesla is also in the process of modifying two other specifications : – its lane change system within five seconds of signalling, – remote control limited to 6 metres by forcing the user to be within 6 metres of the car and connected via Bluetooth. This situation reminds us of the German manufacturer, who had to cancel the deployment of its “Traffic Jam Pilot” system which allows SAE level 3.
The manufacturer had to limit its use on the old continent.
