Starlink Cellular Set to Launch

Starlink and T-Mobile are preparing to introduce Starlink Cellular and its internet network. This new service will make satellite-based cellular coverage possible, connecting places without conventional cell towers. There are plans to put 300 cellular satellites in orbit, up from the current count of 192. As per T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert, Starlink Cellular’s beta launch is anticipated in late 2024 or early 2025.

Starlink’s Low Earth Orbit Technology

The core of this change is the innovative technology from Starlink. Starlink uses a constellation of satellites orbiting at a mere 550 kilometers above Earth, in contrast to regular satellite internet, which depends on a single geostationary satellite 35,786 km above Earth. Compared to the more than 600 milliseconds of latency experienced by standard satellite internet services, this low orbit greatly reduces latency, enabling fast, consistent internet connections with a latency as low as 25 milliseconds.

Air France’s Game-Changing Partnership with Starlink

Air France is taking a significant step in improving its onboard Wi-Fi experience by collaborating with Starlink. With the introduction of ultra-high-speed Wi-Fi aboard all Air France aircraft starting in 2025, travelers will enjoy “ground-like” connectivity. All passengers, regardless of class of travel, will be able to connect several devices, including computers, tablets, and smartphones, at no cost, thanks to this new service.

Customers of Air France’s Flying Blue reward program can avail themselves of this service by logging in. On the site, those without an account can quickly create one. During their travels, customers can play video games, watch live news, enjoy movies and series, and remain in touch with family thanks to this seamless connectivity.

Rollout and Transition Period

By the summer of 2025, Air France intends to install Starlink on every aircraft in its fleet, including smaller jets. Aircraft without Starlink will continue to provide a basic connectivity service throughout the transition. Members of Flying Blue will be given a complimentary “Message Pass” for instant messaging; other travelers can choose to pay for an upgraded subscription to access more internet services.

By doing this, Air France positions itself as a pioneer in in-flight connection and provides customers with an enhanced experience at no additional expense.

United Airlines and Other Airline Partnerships

It is not just Air France gaining from Starlink’s technological advancements. Starlink has worked with a number of other airlines to provide high-speed Wi-Fi on their flights, including United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Qatar Airways. Particularly, United Airlines intends to install Starlink on more than 1,000 aircraft, making it one of the biggest agreements of its sort in the sector.
