Ford Opens Tesla Supercharger Access with Free Adapter
Ford declared in May that it would embrace Tesla’s charge connector, officially known as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), marking a watershed moment in EV charging technology. This move represents a fundamental shift in the EV sector, creating new opportunities for EV owners.
Ford’s commitment to integrating Tesla’s charge connector includes implementing it into future EV vehicles and supplying free adapters to current Ford EV owners. This adaptor intends to improve accessibility and convenience for Ford EV users, in line with the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction and innovation.
Free Adapter Availability
Qualifying Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners can receive a free CCS to NACS converter. The first deliveries are scheduled to begin in March, marking a significant milestone in Ford’s transition to electrification. This program demonstrates Ford’s proactive approach to fulfilling the increasing requirements of its customers. Ford states:
“Today, Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E retail customers are the first of any non-Tesla automaker to gain access to Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada,”.
Unlocking Tesla Supercharger Support
Ford is also releasing a software upgrade that will enable Tesla Supercharger functionality for Mach-E and Lightning vehicles. This update marks a significant milestone, as Ford becomes the first non-Tesla carmaker to provide its customers with access to Tesla Superchargers throughout the United States and Canada.
Ordering Process
Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning drivers can acquire the adapter by visiting Ford’s website and logging in with their Ford account to check eligibility. Enrollment in the BlueOval Charge Network, which is free to join, is also necessary. This shortened approach is intended to make it easier for Ford EV owners to obtain the adaptor.
Adapter Specifications
The adaptor is intended to enable fast charging at Tesla V3 Superchargers, with a charging rate of up to 150kW. However, the adaptor will not work with Tesla V2 Superchargers or Destination Chargers. Ford prioritizes safety by including measures such as an interlock to prevent unplugging and temperature sensors.
Tesla Supercharger Compatibility
Tesla Superchargers will offer Plug & Charge for Ford EVs, providing seamless charging experiences. Drivers may locate supported Tesla Superchargers using either the FordPass app or the Charge Assist app on their mobile devices. Tesla’s website now features a NACS filtering option that shows charger availability for various EV models.
Expansion of Charging Network
Ford’s commitment to electrification goes beyond adaptor provision and software updates. The BlueOval Charge Network, Ford’s public charging network, has over 126,000 chargers spread over 35,000 locations, including 28,000 DC fast chargers. This extensive network encourages EV adoption and improves driver access to charging stations.
Ford’s adoption of Tesla’s charging connector and offer of free adapters mark a watershed point in the EV market. Ford’s embrace of collaboration and innovation improves the charging experience for its consumers and accelerates the transition to electric mobility. As the automotive landscape evolves, efforts like these help pave the road for a more sustainable and electric future.
